Report Africa 2009 (7)

28. Kajjansi, HUKJ - 14.03.2009 - 195 NM - 1:41

With two 360°-circles we climbed to the necessary altitude of 9500 ft. At Kajjansi airfield we refueled the aircraft and here waited also our new friends Emma and Tim. They showed us every corner of Kampala and in the evening we had a great barbeque at the airfield with other friends.

29. Entebbe, HUEN - 15.03.2009 - 15 NM - 00:07

The whole night it was pouring of rain in the morning as well so that we had a delay with our departure. At the International Airport we did immigration an left immediately afterwards to Tanzania.

A comment to Uganda: There are more humps, always 5 behind each other, than in Mexico. So a little wish, the inventor of this idea should be hump 6 and 7 for one day and only the bicycles should drive over him, a 20 t-lorry is not necessary. There is no extra track for the bicycles.

30. Zanzibar, HTZA - 15.03.2009 - 585 NM - 04:14

We flew over the Lake Victoria, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Lake Manyara and over Masai land. It had been a fantastic flight in low level and so we discovered a lot of game and enjoyed the beautiful nature.

At the airport we rented a car for 3 days. There were not road signs and so it was difficult to find the right way but nevertheless it worked perfectly with asking. The landscape of the northern island is more interesting than the southern part. During our visit to Jazini National Park we saw a lot of Colobus monkeys which are endemic.

5 years ago the island and the population were politer. Nowadays everybody is touching and demanding and during night there is no going out. At the resort at the eastern part of the island something didn´t work properly and so did we critic. Immediately the hotel manager came up and told us that there is the possibility that we had to leave the island within one hour. Here we felt racialism against white skin. Also the Airport isn´t friendly, we had to pay US$ 300,- including a special tax. The whole island is in hands of strict Moslem. All along the roads you´ll find signs “Revolutions Government of Zanzibar”.

31. Malindi, HKML - 18.03.2009 - 207 NM - 1:43

Over the island of Pemba an Mombasa we flew along the coast to Malindi. We experienced a nice welcome and spent three lazy and peaceful days at Watamu Beach in the Ocean Sports Resort. Here at the Indian Ocean is still all beautiful while nowadays a lot of demonstrations and disturbances in Nairobi makes the city very dangerous.

32. Djibouti, HDAM - 21.03.2009 - 940 NM - 7:28

Actually we had planned to fly from Malindi to Mogadishu and stay there for one night but all the information we received warned us because a landing could already cause the loss of our aircraft. Presently there are also fights at the airport. So we flew directly from Malindi over Ethiopia to Djibouti. We found an overcrowded town with a lot of poor refugees but we also saw a lot of rich people who are doing their business with the UN and other organizations because you can live best of all the donations from foreign countries.

The way from the airport to the town is a dump. We had to drive to 7 hotels to find finally accommodation, a very shabby place. Who is using the 5-stars hotels you haven´t to think about.
