Report Round the World (12)

68. Pucallpa, SPCL – 05.03.08 – 445 NM – 3:33

Jungle, jungle and so we crossed several times the Ucayali river without seeing any people. The AVGAS promised by Luis, the owner of Aero Condor, and the Airport Manger of Puerto Maldonado was of course not available. A Swiss pilot, living for more than 30 years in Peru, helped us and organized tuel from a mission called SAM. We took a taxi, drove 25 km and bought just enough AVGAS for crossing the Andes to Trujillo. This organization took us 2 days

Pucallpa itself is are jungle village still like hundreds of years ago (remember the movie “Fitzcaraldo” with Klaus Kinsky). Here is still adventure and the harbor is fascinating.

69. Trujillo, SPRU – 07.03.08 – 510 NM – 4:01

Typical for the officials at the airport: they thought we don’t continue our flight as it was again pouring with rain. So we had a lot of troubles paying our landing fees and finally could leave. The MET-report promised weather improvement over the Andes. This was correct and the routing, already prepared in Germany, with waypoints in FL 130 was accurate. This was the second crossing of the Andes on this tour.

70. Lima, SPIM – 07.03.08 – 260 NM - 2:05

Immediately after refueling we flew along the coast to Lima. The climate is completely different in comparison to the jungle, hot and dry. The landscape is of volcanic beginning but in the meantime all is covered by white sand from the sea and so it looks like huge dunes. The promised free of charge parking with Aero Condor was again an air bubble. The Peruvian pilots aren’t helpful, liar and have a mafia structure. It was told to us that Jet-fuel is necessary to produce the drugs and the AVGAS for the transport for the small aircrafts. Therefore is no fuel available at the east sides of the Andes and nobody will help you from the own stock.

After visiting many cities in South America, Lima is not very special, only very big with a population of 10 millions. Only beautiful is the Plaza de Mayor with all the buildings and the cathedral. Why? Here are the houses of the government, the mayor and the throne of the archbishop.

The biggest highlight was the recovery and affectionate meeting with Ralf’s relatives. His grandmother and other family members lived in Lima. We found the “new” family over the internet before we left Germany.

71. Trujillo, SPRU – 10.03.08 – 265 NM – 2:02

A short and relaxing VFR flight. The Placa de Mayor is really a clean place and looks like polished and is surrounded by beautiful colored houses with balconies. It is peculiar, but every second shop is a drug store, so many that you are stumbling over them. This raises the suspicion that shampoo, stain and tooth cream are mixed to cocktails. When you look at some faces you are not wrong.

72. Guayaqil, SEGU – 11.03.08 – 405 M – 2:57

A flight along the Andes and the summits were partly free of clouds. The town is similar to many small metropolitans in the US. The Malecón invites everybody to stroll along the Rio Guayas.

73. Galapagos, SEGS – 12.03.08 – 655 NM – 4:48)

Baltra/Galapagos - During the whole flight we had an elevator feeling. We crossed the whole Isla de Santa Cruz from the north to the south by car without hightlights. Puerto Ayora is only a by-pass for Galapagos-cruises.
