Report Round the World (2)

7. Phuket, VTSP – 7.11.07 – 695 NM – 5:05

In Chiang Mai as well as in Phuket there is a lot of paperwork upon arrival and departure. Fuel has to be paid in local currency and no US$, credit cards of fuel cards are accepted. Very low clouds and rain we experienced during our landing. In Phuket we’ll stay now for 5 days for relaxing and hopefully we’ll see the sun.

07.11. - 12.11.2007
Patong Beach is lively and beautiful. Sex tourism is found during day and night. This is highly appreciative for all the lovers but the spectators enjoy it, too.

8. Kuala Lumpur, WMSA –12.11.07 – 385 NM – 2:55

After many days of rain in Phuket Petrus hat pity for us and we had a smooth flight to Kuala Lumpur. A clean, pulsation and business-minded city welcomed us. The Petronas Twin Towers with 452 m height are the centre of attention and to visit them is a must. Really impressive! Don’t forget Chinatown, a place with yelling and overcrowed.

09. Pontianak, WIOO – 14.11.07 – 530 NM – 4:10

This was a flight without any problems. Only around Singapore we were radar vectored which led to a time delay. In Pontianak we were welcomed by Gerhard, a mission pilot who arranged AVGAS for us. He is living in the same county in Germany as we do but we never met before. At his home was a great welcome and a birthday party as Beni his son had his 4th birthday.

10. Balikpapan, WALL – 15.11.07 – 485 NM – 3:21

We flew VFR and most of the time in clouds. But gaps showed us the rain forest of Borneo and so we were able to discover the jungle. Here we had the first highlight of this journey: The visit of the world wide famous Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. This is a spectacular development programme for the survival of the Orangutans, the sun bears, other animals and the re-naturation of the rain forest. We met the founder of BOS personally, a person who gives all to this project. Everybody interested in this survival project should give support.

11. Manado, WAMM – 17.11.07 – 545 NM – 3:40

Thunderstorms and heavy tropical rains on the whole flight under VFR conditions. During our approach there was no visibility and the controller informed us that the airport is closed now. We insisted and finally we could continue the approach and land.Steve Manda with his daughter and son waited for us and helped us to refuel the aircraft with 3 drums of AVGAS with a manual hand pump. We were lucky to taxi directly into an open hangar as it was still heavy rain and the layers of the clouds were on the ground.
We were invited by the family to stay overnight in their home. For dinner we went to the mission campus where wild roasted pork was served in combination with an interesting performance and typical songs.

12. Manokwari, WASR – 18.11.07 – 610 NM – 4:27

This was a flight along the equator with 38°C in the cockpit. Also here a drum of AVGAS waited for us. The fuel pump didn’t work properly and so the aircraft was refuelled with our 5-l-bucket, lot of patience was needed. The town itself isn’t interesting but the inhabitants are friendly.
