Report Round the World (3)
13. Jayapura, WAJJ – 19.11.07 – 405 NM – 2:51
14. Wewak, AYWK – 19.11.07 – 195 NM – 1:36
15. Karawari, ZZZZ – 19.11.07 – 100 NM – 0:49
The clock rang at 4.00 a.m. Only so it would possible to arrive in Karawari/PNG in the middle of the bush at sunrise for landing. A fairly short-cut mission at the airport of Jayapura and the immigration officers who came from town delayed the departure from Borneo for hours. Additionally wrong information for the entry of PNG let us land at an airport where neither customs nor immigration were available. This was a perfect day! At least the co-ordinates for the airstrip were o.k. as according to the weather we flew 300 ft above ground and a search of the strip would have been impossible.
Here in Karawari without any streets human being and nature are one part. A wonderful lodge with masks and different carvings perfectly fitted into this paradise was our home for the next 3 days. With a small boat cruising on the Karawari river we visited several villages where people are not yet spoiled by the tourism. At every place we experienced a shy but friendly welcome.
16. Mt. Hagen, AYMH – 22.11.07 – 90 NM – 0:46
We had to climb very fast from 15 ft to 9000 ft and to circle around the summits of 4000 m. Where is the runway, ditch through the clouds (quite normal here) and taxi at 5388 ft altitude. Now we’re in the mountain region of PNG. A very comfortable place after the humidity and heat of 36° C the days before. Rain in the afternoon didn’t interrupt a hike through the rain forest. Over dirty roads we visited the next day different villages with a 4WD.
17. Port Moresby, AYPY – 24.11.07 – 335 NM – 2:26
An usual flight between mountains, jungle and clouds. Finally we waited 3 hours for refuelling with AVGAS, a horrible procedure in that burning heat. The city itself is very disappointing, only dirt and all the people are hanging around.
18. Darwin, YPDN – 25.11.07 – 990 NM – 7:31
Blue skies and a calm sea were the perfect weather for this long distance flight over water. Darwin is a small modern city at the Beagle Gulf. Sightseeing was done fast and so we had time for the internet and further flight preparations which were necessary.
19. Jabiru, YJAB – 27.11.07 – 120 NM – 1:02
A small jump and we landed again. 2 days we drove through the Kakadu National Park. The 1000 of years old art of the Aborigines is really impressive. At Yellow Water the world of the birds and the salt water crocodiles said hello. Only the billions of flies are a plague.
20. Kununura, YPKU – 29.11.07 – 330 NM – 2:33
Everybody admires Kununura but they speak about the surrounding; the Kimberly Mountains. We made a stopover and saw as on other places before the sadness of the Aborigines.
