Report Round the World (5)
28. Coober Pedy, YCBP – 9.12.07 – 435 NM – 3:15
During bright sunlight we flew over the large salt lake, Lake Gairdner into the outback to the cave dwellers. They dig and dig to get quickly rich with the opals. But most of them get disappointed all their live, staying here in inhospitable climate conditions. Also we stayed overnight below the ground, a so called “dugout room”.
29. Ayers Rock, YAYE – 10.12.07 – 365 NM – 2:51
The Geier-Flyer flew us over the Victoria Desert, an unchanging landscape, until he discovered the red rock Uluru. Before landing we started our scenic flight to Ayers Rock and the Olgas. It was phantastic to see the famous rocks from the air, nearly in touching distance. At sunrise we walked around the holy rock of the Aborigines. Later on we drove to the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) and it began to rain. Strange but it kept raining the whole day and night.
30. Alice Springs, YBAS – 12.12.07 – 200 NM – 1:45
We had heavy rain in Ayers Rock and deep cloud layers and so we steeled (flew) away. In Alice Springs we got the last rental car, a nine seater van. We enjoyed touring the east and west McDonalds Ranges, a great fun. In this vastness we almost were alone. Not alone were the wallabies and the wild camels which we could observe.
31. Mt. Isa, YBMA – 14.12.07 – 370 NM – 2:50
Again it was a very hot flight over the Outbacks. On the ground we had 48°C in the shadow and on the sheet metal of the aircraft you could fry eggs. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to visit the gold mine due to our late arrival. It was already closed and so we didn’t find any cooling beneath the ground. Our opinion, the miners were scared that we could steel gold like a raven.
32. Hamilton Isl., YBMH – 15.12.07 – 545 NM – 4:00
How can a person live in a wasteland made from sand and stone as we discovered it? We couldn’t. But people are different. But the approach to Hamilton Island was fantastic. Already during flight we had the South Seas feeling. Next day we booked a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling. This was an unique experienceof the underwater world with corals in glowing colours and forms as well as the small and large coloured fish swarms.
33. Hervey Bay, YHBA – 17.12.07 – 455 NM – 3:19
Along at beautiful islands and the Great Barrier Reef we flew to Hervey Bay. On the way we discovered dolphins, many fish swarms and coral reefs. Actually we planned to land directly at Fraser Island, but for this time it wasn’t possible. So we used for the 40 minutes transfer a catamaran to the rain forest island with the beautiful golden yellow sand beaches. Here we relaxed. But nevertheless we were hiking to see the dingos; and we were lucky to meet them.
