Report Round the World (6)
34. Brisb.-Archerf., YBAF – 19.12. – 160 NM – 1:26
Once more we flew over Fraser Island before we went on route. Target was the reporting point for entering the GAAP CTR of Brisbane. Here we received a great welcome by Bill, our friend and also an earthrounder (2002 with his Bonanza V36A). D-GHAN got into the maintenance which was already arranged in before.
We stayed with Bill and his family and had a beautiful time with them. Brisbane is a town you could live.
35. Watts Bridge, YWSG – 21.12.07 – 55 NM – 0:30
At YWSG Bill is owing a house with a hangar and an original Tiger Moth from 1942 is parked here. Flying with the Tiger Moth was superb as well as the BBQs and relaxing with Bill’s family and other friends. Thank you!
36. Coffs Harbour, YBCH – 23.12.07 – 220 NM – 1:29
Next morning what a surprise; heavy rain and no visibility. So it was the first time within Australia that we flew IFR. We had an appointment with Dick Smith in Coffs Harbour, also an earthrounder in a helicopter and fixed wings from pole to pole. He picked us up by helicopter and 5 minutes later we landed at his new property. A palace made from glass in the middle of the rain forest with a beautiful view to the sea. We had lunch with his family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere, but only too short. Dick flew us back by helicopter as we continued our flight to Melbourne on the same day.
37. Melb.-Essendon, YMEN – 23.12. – 935 NM – 5:03
We had a fantastic visibility. Close to Melbourne clouds forced a descent. At the reporting point Sugar Loaf Essendon Tower approved a direct approach.
Melbourne is a beautiful vivid town. Sorry, but nearly only Chinese are met. An old lady complained about foreignization. This is understandable.
We celebrated like in Germany Christmas Eve with a good dinner. Our thoughts were with our twin daughters at home. We missed them but a long phone call helped us to relieve our home sickness.
38. Strathan, NSRN – 26.12.07 – 270 NM – 2:10
With very good visibility we flew over the city, the piers and along the coast. Tasmania greeted with strong winds and rain. Strathan is situated at the west coast in a remote area, but the village itself is quite nice.
39. Hobart, YMHB – 26.12.07 – 110 NM – 00:48
Due to cloud layers we were forced to file an IFR-Flight Plan to Hobart over radio after take-off. Very bad winds gave us a ground speed of 185 kts at 7000 ft with a power setting of only 40 %. Hobart is a beautiful city and we were delighted. For 2 days we rented a car, drove to the north of the island to the Cradle Mountains for hiking. Tasmania is a special highlight with its nature. Back in Hobart we found an overcrowded town with people completely drunk. They celebrated the sailing event Sydney – Hobart.
