Report Round the World (7)

40. Sydney Bankst., YSBK – 29.12. – 590 NM – 4:21

The flight over Tasmania was like a ride on a roller coaster; up and down – backwards and forwards. Finally, over the sea it became calmer. Pilot friends Marylin and Mark invited us to stay with them at their home. We spent a nice time together.
On 31.12.087 in the early morning we had a private cruise through the harbour on Mark’s boat. Later on we moved into Dick Smith’s unit which is directly situated to the Harbour Bridge. With a view over the skyline of Sydney and the Opera we experienced the most beautiful fireworks of the worlds. Thanks to all of you. Thousands of New Year’s Eve fans lay sieged the complete harbour area, the place was overcrowded.

41. Sydney Intern., YSSY – 01.01.08 – 50 NM - 0:28

On New Year’s Day we transferred the aircraft to the International Airport to be able to clear customs and immigration for our flight on the next day to New Zealand. Of course we involved a scenic flight over the city, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera. So we had 3 variations: walking over the Harbour Bridge, passing through by boat and overflying.

42. Christchurch, NZCH – 02.01.08 – 1170 NM – 8:26

This was an easy going flight over the sea. New Zealand welcomed us with a fantastic view to the snow-covered Mt. Cook, 3754 m. For 5 days we rented a car and drove to Dunedin, Invercargill, Te Anau, Milford Sound including a cruise, Franz Josef Glacier, Hokatito and back to Christchurch; altogether a drive of 2100 km. One word: breathless nature. At the airport we were perfectly handled by Jet Capital Services free of charge (Owner Peter van Dyke). Thanks a lot!

43. Wellington, NZWN – 08.01.08 – 180 NM – 1:27

Nearly no visibility with cloud layers. In low level we flew VFR to Wellington. The pilots at the Aero Club didn’t want to recognise us and we didn’t find any assistance. This is an experience we made at many places in Australia and New Zealand. From the human sight these are countries we wouldn’t like to live. The town itself is not remarkable. For 2 days we drove through the country side along snow covered volcanoes to Lake Taupo. Before departure we met personally Peter van Dyke and would like to thank him for all his support.

44. Auckland, NZAA – 11.01.08 – 325 NM – 2:15

What we admired from the car we saw once more from the air, only easier and faster. Every green expanse was covered with white dots: “Sheep”. A German pilot friend, Manfred Scherbius, who is living for 25 years in New Zealand, showed us the City of Sails with his car. That was great fun. Thank you Manfred.

45. Nouméa-Tontouta, NWWW - 12.1. - 1026 NM - 7:33

This was a normal IFR-flight. During approach we had a nice view over the city of Nouméa and the airport of Magenta. We cleared here only customs and immigration.

46. Nouméa-Magenta, NWWM - 12.01.08 - 24 NM - 0:14

An additionally short flight and we landed in Magenta. We received a very friendly welcome from the local Aero Club and were driven to the hotel. It's fun to walk for hours along the beach. We travelled all over the beautiful tropical islan uphill and downhill. Our rented Clio drove us through this fantastic panorama.
