Report Round the World (8)
47. Fiji - Nadi, NFFN - 17.01.08 - 770 NM - 5:22
During our whole stay starting from the arrival until the departure we only had heavy rain and strong winds. Fiji is an island with many mountains but nearly no beaches and we didn't find any "South Sea Feeling".
48. Tonga - Nuku'Al., NFTF - 19.1. - 480 NM - 3:22
Forget Tonga! It is a dirty, not interesting island. Like in Fiji we only had troubles at the airport. Only the stay in a German lodge and the personal meeting with Peter Goldstern, the chief pilot of the King of Tonga, made our stay nice.
49. Rarotonga, NCRG - 22/21.01.08 - 860 NM - 7:57
A cyclon showed us his strength with 40 kts of headwind. We arrived during heavy rain and became wet till our skin. The beaches were evacuatd, all the shops were closed and barricated and the harbour was closed, too. All the inhabitants were hysteric according to the cyclon.
During this flight we crossed the data line and gained one day. Also upon arrival we have circumnavigated once the world with 44680 km and 183 hours of flying.
50. Aitutaki, NCAI - 23.01.08 - 145 NM - 1:23
As soon as the weather allowed it we flew to the most beautiful lagoon of the South Pacific. During a cruise we saw all the beautiful atolls and the first time we had a "South See -Feeling". According to the cyclon the beaches were covered with coralls, shells and beautiful stones.
51. Rarotonga, NCRG - 25.01.08 - 155 NM - 1:12
We flew very low over Aitutaki and circumnavigated the whole lagoon. Many people were waving to us, simply wonderful. Upon arrival in Rarotonga we refuelled the aircraft with drums and checked a lot of things for our flight tomorrow to Tahiti.
Thank you to Munro and Marcus from Air Rarotonga for their great support. This is one of the islands worthwhile to visit again.
52. Tahiti, NTAA – 26.01.08 – 620 NM – 5:16
This was an uneventful flight. But as very often happened to us we had our parking position at the opposite site of the airport. So we were forced to change to the other site to the International Terminal. For this we wasted one hour. Afterwards we had to return to the aircraft to secure it, getting our luggage and again back to the International Terminal as only here it was possible to book a hotel, getting a taxi or renting a car. We had already now a bad feeling concerning our departure and it happened. The treatment was even worse upon our departure. Never Tahiti again!
53. Bora Bora, NTTB – 28.01.08 – 145 NM – 1:04
Heavy rain during the whole flight, upon arrival and the whole day through. Fortunately the next day we found sun shine. Bora Bora is a very expensive exclusive island. Outside the resorts you’ll find only dirty, actually not a nice view for the eyes. The South Pacific is a dream only at the advertising brochures.
