55. Totegegie, NTGJ – 31.01.08 – 970 NM – 7:47

Fully refueled we climbed to 7000 ft, after two hours to 9000 ft and finally after the next two hours to 11000 ft. Finally the approach and the landing were at a very narrow landing strip.

From the main island Mangareva we returned by a nut shell (boat) to the airport. The sea was very rough and it rained very heavy. So we were completely soaked and nearly sea sick. Arriving at the airport we had to wait another two hours until we could start to refuel the aircraft. A special constructed air pressure mechanic (pumps are not available) helped us to refuel with 3 drums of AVGAS. It took us a long time to arrange fuel and shipment to this place.

56. East. Isl., SCIP – 01./02.2. – 1415 NM – 10:14

This was a long flight during night over the South Pacific. Without HF you can’t fly in this region. This experience was made by the crew of a Pilatus. Tahiti ACC didn’t allow them to continue the flight without a HF. They simply forgot to install a HF, even having a lot of money.

Easter Island is the first really beautiful island in the South Pacific, friendly people and a fantastic landscape. With a jeep we discovered the whole island and said hello to all the Moais. A long time ago Juan organized four drums of AVGAS and he looked very nice after us. A real friend. Now we have the next 13 hours night flight before us.

57. Robinson Cr., SCIR – 5.2.08 – 1635 NM – 12:14

We experienced a beautiful sunset during take-off and the flight during night was easy going. During approach at Robinson Crusoe the whole island was full in clouds and so we needed 4 approaches to find a hole for landing. But a quick decision was necessary as works are in progress and we had to find out which of the 2 runways is the right one for landing.

The nature at this island is fantastic. The main island with the inhabitants is full of secrets. Nearly all of them have the same family name (after the warship “Dresden” sank). The romantic and adventures you’ll find only in the book named after this island.

58. S.d.C.. Eul. Sanch., SCTB - 7.2. - 433 - 3:22

This flight felt like a chewing gum in comparison to the 12 hours-flight. Santiago is a lively capital, beautiful situated at the Andes. We enjoyed to watch the inhabitants at the Plaza de Armas while drinking a beer. The well known long distance pilot Madleine Dupont de Böck and also our friend arranged everything perfectly for us at the airfield. Thank you Madleine!
